Why Fat Builds?

Obesity is having too much fat on your body.  People who are 20% over their natural weight are considered fat.  The additional calories that we eat are that not instantly needed for fuel are stored into fat.

If we still lived in a "Hunter/Gather" society then the extra fat stored within our body would be a good thing.  The extra fat would be used during a time when food was scarce.  We now live in a country where food is plentiful.

So...what causes fat to build?

Lack of Exercise - I hear people making excuses about not having enough time to exercise.  If you have time to sit down and watch TV for an hour or more, then you have time to exercise.  If you can't miss your favorite TV show then why can't you exercise while you watch TV?  I do it all the time!  Even if it's doing pushups and situps during the commercials, jogging on the treadmill, or riding your stationary bike during your favorite TV show.

Other people even go as far as saying that they can't afford a gym membership or exercise equipment.  In some cases this may be true, but that's not a good excuse not to workout.  There are plenty of things that you can do without a gym membership or owning exercise equipment.  You can walk, jog, do jumping jacks, pushups, sit ups, body squats, lunges, chin ups, etc,..  There are MANY body exercises you can do without any equipment.

Improper Digestion - Proper digestion will not happen without the required enzymes. Raw foods have their own digestive enzymes and help the digestive procedure, but dietary enzymes are destroyed when we eat processed foods,  Your body is now accountable for all of the digestive enzymes needed to break down your food. This places an HUGE need for metabolic energy on your body causing digestive stress that increases weight gain.

Bad Eating Habits - Alcohol and late night eating.  Most people love to relax and have a good time.  Some people choose to go out dancing, see a live a band, or go to a sports bar and consume alcoholic beverages with their friends.  A lot of my friends LOVE to go through that late night drive though and order some fattening food.  Not good for ya!  A combination of alcohol and late night snacking will surely make you gain weight.  Alcohol will metabolize in your body just like sugar.  In simple terms...it will be stored in your body as FAT!  Same thing with the fried food your putting in your body.  I think that needs no explanation.

Hypothyroidism -  This is a deficiency of the Thyroid hormone.  It slows down your metabolism causing weight gain.  If you find yourself sleeping too much, feeling fatigued, or having headaches all the time, you should see your doctor.

Menopause - As many women come near menopause, they discover themselves going through unexplained weight gain around their stomach area.   Women's bodies start changing where they lose their shape in their hips and thighs and gain towards their mid-section.  Lower estrogen levels cause this problem.

The key thing is to offset this problem by exercising on a regular basis.

Prescription Drugs - Certain drugs that treat mood disorders, diabetes, and depression can cause weight gain.  Some drugs will increase your appetite, make you sleepy (less likely to be active), and even change your insulin levels.

If you think that your prescribed medication is causing your weight gain, talk to your Doctor.  Do NOT go off your medications before talking to your Doctor.  You could make matters worse!

Stress - Some people will put on the pounds when they're under stress. When you're stressed you may find it harder to keep up with healthy eating habits.  There have been some studies that propose that a hormone is released by your body during stressful times that causes you to gain weight.   You metabolism slows down, and it's easier for you to gain weight.   You should try to find activities that will relieve some of your stress.
