Warmup and Stretching
The most important thing to do before you start your workout is
to warmup and stretch. I currently teach beginner's Boxing, and
sometimes Jiu-Jitsu classes. I always stress to the students that
it is VERY important for to warm up and stretch before you start
your workout.
I always warm up my students with a light jog to get the blood
flowing through the body to decrease stiffness. I do this for 10
minutes and then I'll have them stretch. Warming up increases
muscle elasticity, and increases your range of motion.
- 1st - Warm up for 10 mins: Do any aerobic activity
- (light jog, jumping jacks, or riding a stationary bike) to get
- get the blood flowing to increase your body temperature.
- 2nd - Stretch: After you finish with your warmup, stretch
- your legs, arms, chest, back, and calve muscles.
FAQ:
- Q: What if I don't have time to warm up and stretch!
- A: Warming up and stretching is VERY important, and your should not neglect this part of your workout routine. In fact this SHOULD be a part of your workout routine. Not warming up or stretching could increase the chances of serious injury.
Let me ask you this. Would you rather spend 15 mins a day warming up, or be out of commission for 6-8 weeks nursing a pulled hamstring muscle? It's happened to me twice! Why? Because I didn't warm up and stretch properly!
