Now if we watched that commercial you'll be saying, "Yeah right! That commercial is full of crap!"
Ask anybody that has any type of College Degree (Associates, Bachelors, or Master's Degree) to tell you what it took for them to earn their degree. They will tell you they had to go to class, listen, do their homework, write reports, and study for long periods of time. They will tell you they studied their butts off to earn their degree.
So why is it that so many people believe in those commercials that promises you to melt off those pounds with little or no effort. I mean you can't turn on your TV without seeing a commercial advertising their "miracle diet". I just have to shake my head at those commercials that promise to help you "lose weight while you sleep".
Lose weight while you sleep?!?! Are you kidding me??? How about "work out 10 min's a day and lose weight". I'm sure you heard that one before. Americans are spending millions of dollars on these fad diets, but Americans are still getting fatter.
What are we doing wrong?
We're just plain LAZY! Some people don't wanna hear the truth, but sometimes the truth hurts! A lot of people are NOT exercising enough. In order to lose weight you have to do Regular slow cardio 4-6 days a week! You don't have to kill yourself doing it. I strongly recommend 30 to 60 min's of LONG/SLOW cardio. I personally get on the treadmill and jog 6 miles per hour, 45 min's a day, 4-5 days a week. Some days I'll only jog for 30 min's. That's 1 mile for every 10 min's your on the treadmill. You can go slower as long as you're at your Target Heart Rate. If you work out too hard going OVER your Target Heart Rate then your body will use the carbs or sugars in your body for fuel instead of FAT. You need to get in your Fat Burning Zone.
Some people go about it the wrong way by eating less or by starving themselves. Your body thinks that there is a shortage of food. Your body’s metabolism will slow down and your body will start to store fat. It’s protecting itself. Your body doesn't know the difference. Eventually you will have to eat again. The next time you eat your body will store more fat because your body thinks that it’s starving.
So what's the problem?
The problem is that a lot of people are just lazy when it comes to working out. A lot of people want to lose weight with the least amount of effort possible. This one guy asked me this question when he saw how much weight I lost. He asked me, "So...was it hard to lose all that weight?" My response was, "Hell yeah it was hard!" I told him all the junk food I gave up, and the slow cardio I had to do in order to lose weight. He said, "Man I don't think I can give up burgers, sodas, or pizza." I said, "Either you want it or you don't. There's no in between."
Let's change the way we think!
All my healthy friends I know on a personal basis don't diet. The word "diet" just sounds too temporary. They call it a Lifestyle Change. They eat a wide range of healthy foods, cut out all junk foods, and they avoid eating more calories than they actually need. They all eat 5-6 times a day. Something similar to what I eat on a daily basis. Look at my Meal Examples to see what I'm talking about. They all work out 4-6 days a week (combination or cardio and some kind of weight training routine). Most of them (including myself) allow a "cheat meal" once a week, where we get to eat something not as healthy such as a burger or pizza.
In today's society a lot of people want instant gratification. Don't have the money to buy that 52 inch Flat Screen TV? People will use their credit card instead of saving for several months to pay CASH for the TV.
Same thing goes with weight loss. Taking the Lifestyle Change approach will help you safely lose weight. Research shows that individuals who lose weight slowly will keep it off.
Make healthy choices:
Drink Water instead of sodas
Eat Whole Grain Bread instead of white bread
Eat Brown Rice instead of white rice
Eat Turkey Sausage instead of pork sausage
Eat Turkey Bacon instead of pork bacon
Eat oatmeal (with raw honey) instead of cereals with lots of sugar
Eat nuts (almonds, brazil nuts, pine nuts, or walnuts) instead of chips
Eat lean means such as chicken, turkey, or fish. Limit your red meat intake.
Eat Fresh Fruit (apple, orange, grapefruit) instead of candy
Cut back or exclude your alcohol intake
Pick one day a week where you can have a cheat meal! That way you don't get burned out eating healthy all the time. When I say cheat meal I don't mean eating crappy for breakfast, lunch, AND dinner. Pick ONE meal. Only one :)
I strongly suggest that you prepare your food one day in advance. That way you'll be less tempted to make unhealthy food choices.
FORGET DIETS! LET'S MAKE A LIFESTYLE CHANGE!
